The San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership’s Tourism Coalition is preparing to launch its second edition of the Discover San Gabriel Valley Guide. This resource includes a calendar of events, entertainment venues, things to do in the region and a special feature on Filming in the San Gabriel Valley. New Chamber member Win-Win Workplace Solutions will be hosting a workshop on improving nonprofit board governance on May 20th at the Pasadena Women’s City Club at 160 North Oakland Avenue. The workshop is aimed at both board members and the paid staff of area nonprofits. Key takeaways from the event will be: (1) a better understanding of the nonprofit environment of scrutiny, (2) an understanding of the best practices in nonprofit boards, (3) an awareness of the pitfalls and errors boards make that reduce their effectiveness, and (4) self-evaluation tools that can be used with your boards. The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Cost is free for the first 25 people to sign up and $12 for all others. The City of Pasadena will be recognized with the Green Culture Award at the Green California Summit in Sacramento. The City of Pasadena receives this award for its far-reaching Green City Action Plan. Based on the framework of the United Nations Green Cities Urban Environmental Accords, Pasadena’s ambitious Green City Action Plan follows seven major themes: energy, waste reduction, urban design, urban nature, transportation, environmental health and water conservation. To engage the greater community in implementing the plan, Pasadena created an interdepartmental Green Team as well as a City Council-appointed Environmental Advisory Commission, which meets monthly to ensure public dialogue and to forge continued partnerships with community groups, residents and businesses in every corner of the city. In 2010 Pasadena finalized its Green City Indicators Project, which produced a set of metrics to measure, monitor and report quantifiable results of its sustainability efforts to the community.

A once-in-a-decade survey by the National Research Council reports that financial concerns will have an impact on the scope and depth of planetary science for the foreseeable future. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designated Bob Hope Airport as the primary disaster relief aviation facility for the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
