I received this request from a student at one of our local schools:
Dear Mr. Little,
My name is Rebecca Huang, daughter of Bill Huang. I am a high school senior trying to launch a campaign called the “Friends of the Bad Weather Shelter.”
As you may know, budget cuts have unfortunately rendered the City of Pasadena unable to continue funding Pasadena’s Bad Weather Shelter after this year. But this shelter, which provides the homeless with a warm meal and a place to spend the night during inclement weather, is essential. In the past, it has gotten so cold that nine homeless people have died in Los Angeles County, including one right here in Pasadena. This program must be kept running because it is crucial to preventing further hypothermia-related deaths among the homeless. Therefore, I am undertaking a campaign to raise $60,000 each year to replace the City of Pasadena’s annual contribution.
The original thought was to find 100 “friends” (businesses or individuals) who would donate $600 each year, but any amount would be greatly appreciated. I still need many more “friends” in order to keep the shelter operating. Would you be interested in becoming a “friend,” or could you refer me some businesses (or individuals too) who might be interested in supporting the shelter?
Attached are some documents with more information about the Bad Weather Shelter as well as a couple of letters of recommendation–one from the director of ECPAC (the Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Congregations), which is the organization running the shelter, and another from Mayor Bogaard.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
Rebecca Huang
ps. Please have the businesses directed to the ECPAC website (www.ecpac.net/FriendsOfBWS.html) where they can donate online through Paypal or find instructions on sending in a check to ECPAC. If the website does not answer all their questions, they can contact Ms. Patricia O’Reilly at: (626) 797-2402 or email trishor@gmail.com
Thank you very much for your help!
